Today was a very fun day of riding because I rode on little unmarked back roads trying to find the covered bridges. Some of them are on gravel roads so I didn’t try to get to them because I didn’t want to ride on gravel and because there were lots of others to see. (There are over 30 in Parke County Indiana.) There is a little cafe right next to the Bridgeton Bridge and there is the Covered Bridge festival every year in the fall. The Mansfield Bridge is still crossable and I rode across it but covered bridges are NOT bicycle friendly. The main support boards are perpendicular to the length of the bridge but there is another layer of boards on top of them parallel to the length of the bridge with gaps which almost caused a pinch flat but luckily I crossed without incident. (Think I will walk next time) Why are the bridges covered? 1). To protect the boards from moisture and rot. 2). So the horses would not see the water and be afraid to cross. Perhaps there are other reasons?

Didn’t get started until 2:30 because of the thunderstorms in the morning so could not cover much distance today. There are, surprisingly, quite a few big hills in this part of Indiana and the road quality is not too good. There are lots of patches and uneven surfaces but the scenery is very beautiful. Saw a restored pioneer village at Spring Mill State Park.

Trying to make up for some lost time yesterday so a long ride today but it was a perfect day for it – no rain. Met a father and daughter riding a tandem bike from Mobile, Al. To Cincinnati, Oh. Also saw the old Indiana capital building in Corydon, In. Crossed the Ohio river into Indiana and the midwest but can still get sweet tea here. The roads are much flatter b ut once in a while a huge hill comes up out of nowhwere. After going up and down the hill it is totally flat again.
