Saw Nebraska’s mosÞ famous natural landmark today; Chimney Rock. Also rode on the road which parallels the former Oregon Trail the Pioneers used to travel west. Today the route is used in the opposite direction to transport trainload after trainload of coal from Wyoming to keep the lights on back east. This part of Nebraska is dry and sandy and is called the Sandhills. The North Platte River.valley, however, is very green and fertile farmland. In the hills surrounding the valley to the south are the Wildcat Hills where I am going to do some hiking this afternoon and hope to have some pictures for you. Hopefully there are not any wildcats! Apparently I have a new danger to my bike riding in this area; Goat Head. Several people warned me about this weed. It is very insidious with stickers that can blow onto the road causing flat tires. Someone told me it can even puncture I car tire. Haven’t run over any yet.

Had a second flat tire yesterday at Chadron, Ne. Also hiked to the top of one of the buttes near Chadron and had a great view of the sunset to the northwest. Saw Carhenge today. Assembled in just one week’s time in 1982, some say it is artwork, others say it is a junkyard. It is supposed to be built to the same dimensions and positions as the stones at Stonehenge. I can’t verify if that is true or not since I have not seen Stonehenge.
