It finally warmed up today to ab out 70. It was sunny all day after some morning fog that lasted until about 11. Went over Willow Creek Pass into the North Park area in northern Colorado. Hello to John, a 68 year old guy from Oklahoma who rode most of the way up the pass with me.

It is still kind of cold and rainy today. I went and soaked in the natural hot sulpher pools tonight in the town of Hot Sulphur Springs, Co. This was so much more relaxing than I thought it would be. Especially on a cold day. I had never been to a hot springs before. It was great. I am staying in a little cabin in the mountains at a friend’s house tonight. Thanks, Sean. I’ll have a picture tomorrow.

Rest day. Actually glad I am not riding today or camping tonight. It is cold and rainy (high only 48 degrees today). Did go hiking up to about 12,000 feet on Ptarmigan Mountain during a pocket of no rain and just light rain in the morning. Unfortunately, I did not see any Ptarmigan but did get some good pictures.

Rest day. I am staying with friends; Beth, Kevin, and Ellie today and tomorrow. I went mountain biking today. Thanks, Kevin for.letting me borrow your bike. The trails here are fantastic and the mountain views are incredible. The only problem was keeping my eyes on the trail and not taking the beautiful views. I had to stop a few times to look at the scenery and take pictures because if you are not watching the trail you may go over a steep drop off on side of the mountain.

Third day in the mountains today. Lots of beautiful scenery and this part of the mountains is much greener with lakes and rivers.

Most of the day today I was riding in a big valley around Walden, Co. It is beautiful open prairie land but at around 8000 feet and surrounded by snow covered mountains. It gets cold at night (upper 30′s) but warms up to about 70 during the day. I bought a jacket to use in the mornings until it warms up. You can see the rainstorms coming from miles away and luckily the one I was watching stayed to the north while I was on the bike.

Sorry I couldn’t post last night – no signal.
Rode into the mountains yesterday and it was a beautiful ride.
He first 50 miles followed the Paudre River so it was a very gradual incline of maybe 1 – 2 percet, and the last 5 miles were only about 7 or 8 percent. Those of you who have ridden with me know that this is just what I like so I was pretty happy all day. When I got close to the top of the climb, Cameron Pass 10,276 feet, it satarted to rain. So I waited for a while and while waiting I saw 3 moose along side the road. You should be able to see the big antlers in the photo. Later that night, I saw another moose wandering around the campground. Maybe 100 yards away. He didn’t come to close though. I think all the people may have kept him away.

Last night I heard coyotes howling in the distance. It sounded like ther were pretty far away so I guess I was safe enough! I never saw them anyway. Then, rode through the last of the prairie today to where the flat land meets the Rockies which is also known as the Front Range. I decided to make it a short ride today and rest a little (yesterday was a long, hard ride) and start on the road up into the mountains tomorrow morning.

So far Colorado looks a lot like Western Nebraska, only flatter, browner, and more desolate. I think I saw the Rockies in the distance towards the end of the day, but there were rain clouds moving in from the west so I can’t say for sure. It was a long day riding so there is not much to tell today but I did stop and watch a rodeo for a little bit. I don’t know much about this sport but it seems like I was watching the pre-teen and teenage kids on their horses. They would ride the horse out into the open area and a man on a loud speaker would tell them what to do with their horses. Walk, trot, go in a circle. That sort of thing.
